Georgia Auto InsuranceThe State of Georgia makes it mandatory for drivers to maintain liability auto insurance as a minimum on all owned vehicles. The required insurance pays for damages to other persons or vehicles as a result of a car accident.

Georgia Liability Auto Insurance Requirements

$50,000 per accident for bodily injury to two or more people
$25,000 per accident for property damage

Georgia recently adopted technology giving the state the ability to verify the status of any vehicle’s auto insurance policy. Auto insurance companies are required to electronically notify Georgia’s Department of Revenue of your policy status which gives authorities the ability to verify if your policy is active or cancelled. This system was designed to reduce the number of uninsured drivers in the state of Georgia.

To inquire on your vehicle’s auto insurance status, check with Georgia’s Database. You will be asked for your title number and your vehicle identification number (VIN) which you can obtain by looking at your vehicle registration. Remember to allow 30 days for your carrier to submit proof to the state before it appears in the database.

If your vehicle is not insured for 10 days in a row, your vehicle registration could be suspended and a fee will be charged for reinstatement once your vehicle is insured. Not having your vehicles insured could lead to other expensive fines including a citation and even worse, an uncovered accident.

There are a few exceptions to Georgia’s auto insurance law including a sale of a vehicle, if you turn in a leased vehicle, if you move to another state, if you’re vehicle is brought to a junk yard, was salvaged or totally wrecked, repossessed, stolen or inoperable. Some vehicles used seasonally may also qualify such as agricultural use; additionally, if you are in the military and your vehicle is not being used, you may qualify for an exemption. If your auto qualifies for any one of the exemptions, you will need to fill out an affidavit and submit it for approval.
