Does an auto insurance policy pay for your medical bills?

a medical billHaving auto insurance with medical coverage means that your policy may pay for accident related medical bills up to the specified amount.

Does your policy include medical coverage? - It is important to know and understand that most State laws do not make personal injury coverage mandatory; therefore, it is most likely not added to your policy unless you specifically requested it. Even policies which do have medical coverage often only add a small amount of protection such as $5,000. Keep in mind that hospital bills can add up quickly.

If you live in the US, you most likely fall within one of the two type of states:

  • No Fault States
    • States that make it legally mandatory for drivers to insure themselves with no fault insurance to help protect against personal auto-accident related damages which includes a "specified" amount of protection for personal medical bills.
  • Tort States
    • States that make it legally mandatory for drivers to carry liability auto insurance for damages caused to third party drivers related to automobile related accidents.

In either of the above cases, take a look at your policy or ask your insuring company's representatives if included coverage will pay your medic bills.

Find out if your policy pays for your medical bills:

  • Take a look at your declarations page to see if your policy pays for medical bills, and if so, take a look at the medical protection afforded. Be sure not to confuse it with the liability medical coverage pays for other people's injuries the policyholder is found liable for as a result of a vehicle mishap.
    • If you do not see medical injury protection -Double check with your insurer because you may simply be overlooking the coverage.
    • If you do see it - take a look at the limits to determine how much of the bills it may be able to pay.
